About Us

Our Program: Master of Arts in Linguistics (TESOL)

The Department of Linguistics / Masters of Arts in Linguistics, with a specialization in TESOL, has a long history, a student body from across the U.S and the world, and a national reputation.

Hundreds of our graduates have gone around the world to teach English as a second or foreign language.  Many choose to stay in the United States, working with international students in university-based intensive ESL programs or with immigrants and refugees in community-based organizations.

Languages Housed in our Department: Chinese, Japanese, Hebrew

Though Spanish is the second major language of Chicago, Chinese ,  Japanese, and Hebrew have long been important to the cultural life of the city.  These languages are increasingly important for those interested in the arts, business, food, international studies, popular culture and profound philosophies. Classes in Chinese or Japanese count towards the Minor in Asian Studies

Our Research:

By providing cutting-edge instruction on how to teach second languages, we help newcomers to this country and learners in other countries gain access to resources that knowledge of languages can provide.  In particular, we are interested in furthering knowledge of language learning and effective language teaching in diverse settings. We do so by pursuing research in Applied Linguistics / Language Pedagogy, Discourse Analysis, Second Language Acquisition, Sociolinguistics, and General Linguistics. We also offer a modest number of introductory undergraduate classes in Linguistics and Sociolinguistics.

In the News

"This final project for the section of Chinese 102 taught by Fiona Y. Liu (Liu Laoshi) was inspired by a series of China Mobile’s ad campaigns featuring celebrities and non-celebrities overcoming odds and achieving dreams. The ads end in a simple and relatable phrase, “我能!” (I can!). Students worked in teams to create their own ad for China Mobile, as if they were to win a $1,000 prize from the company.” READ ON
