We currently offer elementary, intermediate, and advanced classes in Japanese. For placement into your class, please contact Michiko Kato Basic Language Coordinator of Japanese. The classes are:
101
Elementary Japanese I
4 hours. Basic
grammar; sentence patterns; vocabulary study; reading and writing
in the two Japanese syllabaries. Four additional half hours each week in the
language laboratory.
102
Elementary Japanese II
4 hours. Continuation of JPN 101. Introduction to selected Chinese
characters. Four additional half hours each week in the language laboratory. Prerequisite(s):
JPN 101.
103
Intermediate Japanese I
4 hours. Advanced
grammar; sentence patterns; vocabulary study; more
strategies for smooth interaction for oral and written communication;
reading and writing in the two Japanese syllabaries and in selected Chinese
characters. Four additional half hours each week in the language laboratory. Prerequisite(s):
JPN 102 or the equivalent.
104
Intermediate Japanese II
4 hours. Continuation of JPN 103. Four additional half hours each week
in the language laboratory. Prerequisite(s): JPN 103 or the equivalent.

Independent Study
1 TO 4 hours. Individual study under faculty direction for qualified
students with special interests and needs. May be repeated to a maximum of 8
hours. Students may register in more than one section per term. Prerequisite(s):
Consent of the instructor.

Advanced Spoken Japanese
3 hours. Emphasis on advanced oral and aural proficiency. Expression of
cultural and personal topics using formal and informal language. Prerequisite(s):
JPN 104, or consent of the instructor.

Japanese Language and Culture
3 hours. Survey of the development of cultural traits and values
throughout Japanese history, and the basic characteristics of Japanese grammar.
Focus on the way in which grammar and vocabulary use reflect those traits and
values. Same as LING 215. World Cultures course.
